7 Facts About the Throat Chakra and How to Tune it

Posted on March 16, 2017

You′ve probably heard people talking about their chakras, or read articles about them online, but just what does it all mean—and where is your throat chakra, anyway? The chakras are energy centers going up your spine from the base of your tailbone to the top of your head.

When they are functioning optimally, you′re balanced and able to handle everything that life throws at you. When they′re out of whack, that′s where you start to feel overwhelmed or out of sorts, or even physically ill. Let′s discuss the throat chakra and how you can tune it.

1) Where Is the Throat Chakra?

The throat chakra is the fifth chakra (going bottom to top.) Its energy is in your throat. It′s found along the cervical curve of your spine, in the region of vertebrae numbered 3 - 5. It resonates with the musical note G.

When the throat chakra is over or underactive, physical ailments often occur in that area of your body. For example, you might get laryngitis or strep throat a lot. Ear and nose infections are also possible. Mouth ulcers, infected taste buds, and toothaches are additional signs that perhaps this chakra needs a tuneup.

While many of these are medical conditions need the care of a doctor, some gentle reiki healing will compliment any treatment that your doctor prescribes in order to help you realign this energy and restore your physical health.

2) What Color is the Throat Chakra?

The throat chakra resonates with the color blue. Most shades of blue apart from the darkest indigo will influence this energy center. Blue stones, blue elixirs, even meditating and flooding your aura with blue will help to bring balance back to the throat chakra.

Blue is soothing and restorative, and known to be a calming and healing color. If you use reiki stones or color therapy, then you′ll want to work with the blue stone. Any blue crystal will do—such as sodalite or lapis lazuli or blue chalcedony. If you don′t have a blue stone, loosely tie a blue scarf around your neck.

This is one of those cases where the intent is more important than the action. If you use a chakra pendulum, then point it at your throat chakra and focus on the blue area of the pendulum. Envision the cool and serene healing of the blue flowing into your throat chakra and bringing it back into alignment.

3) What is the Normal Function of the Throat Chakra?

When it′s functioning properly, the throat chakra helps you to understand when to speak and when to listen. It is the area of your countenance that stimulates your creativity and self-expression.

Even though painting or sculpting or other forms of art may not be verbal, they still convey an idea or provoke a response. They′re still workign within the realm of throat chakra language.

When this area is functioning optimally, you′re aware of who you are. You are confident in sharing your ideas. You know when to speak, and when to listen. You don′t worry that you might be ridiculed or ignored.

You appreciate your value, and you are not apprehensive about being open and communicative with others. If you are at all psychic, this is where you might hear voices or sounds from other dimensions in time and space. The ability to do this is called clairaudience.

4) What Happens When the Throat Chakra Is Overactive?

When this energy center is too open, it manifests as being too communicative. Maybe you talk too much, or too loud. Perhaps you have a habit of interrupting others or talking over them.

You fear that you won′t be heard, so you overcompensate by being larger than life, aggressive, pushy, or domineering. To bring this into balance, use your blue stone, or focus on the blue of your chakra pendulum, or put a blue cloth around your neck, or meditate on the color blue.

Envision yourself relaxing, speaking your truth quietly, waiting for others to finish what they are saying, and really hear their message. So often people listen only to plan what to say next. Stop doing that, and learn how to hear what others are sharing with you.

Repeat the important parts back to them, so that they know they′ve been understood. This also gives them a chance to correct you if you heard something wrong, or to share more of what′s on their mind. Communication, when it works, is always equal give and take.
