7 Facts About the Throat Chakra You Should Know

4) What Happens When the Throat Chakra Is Overactive?

When this energy center is too open, it manifests as being too communicative. Maybe you talk too much, or too loud. Perhaps you have a habit of interrupting others or talking over them.

You fear that you won′t be heard, so you overcompensate by being larger than life, aggressive, pushy, or domineering. To bring this into balance, use your blue stone, or focus on the blue of your chakra pendulum, or put a blue cloth around your neck, or meditate on the color blue.

Envision yourself relaxing, speaking your truth quietly, waiting for others to finish what they are saying, and really hear their message. So often people listen only to plan what to say next. Stop doing that, and learn how to hear what others are sharing with you.

Repeat the important parts back to them, so that they know they′ve been understood. This also gives them a chance to correct you if you heard something wrong, or to share more of what′s on their mind. Communication, when it works, is always equal give and take.

5) What Happens When the Throat Chakra Is Underactive

When the throat chakra is underactive, you′ll have trouble getting your thoughts into words. You may be shy, or introverted, or think that no one wants to hear what you have to say. Your creativity may be stifled, or your self-expression hesitant. You question your value. You let others talk over you or take credit for your ideas.

To bring this back into balance, you have to take control of the situation. Don′t overextend yourself. Learn how to say ‘no′ to what doesn′t resonate with you or what is not important. Stop letting people coerce you into situations that make you feel uncomfortable.

Speak your truth quietly, and assess situations as to whether you′re being respected or overlooked. Remove yourself from associations where people take you for granted. Once again, working with the blue reiki stone or any other blue tool will help you to realign this energy.

6) How is my Throat Chakra Related to Energy?

Being the fifth chakra, many believe that the etheric temple layer of the subtle body resonates with the throat chakra. This is the area of your energy field—your aura—where karma is created. It′s easy to see how this corresponds to the throat chakra.

Saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, or not expressing yourself concisely and appropriately can cause damage. Conversely, it′s good to be able to express yourself clearly to get the most positive impact from your thoughts and ideas.

We talk about being ‘choked up′ with emotion, or ‘lost for words′ when things take us by surprise. This kind of empowered language is rooted in the etheric temple layer of the subtle body, and manifested through the throat chakra.

Imbalances here might also manifest as physical conditions, too; how many times have you seen public speakers who are uncomfortable or nervous take a sip of water or clear their throat?

7) What Can I do to Heal the Throat Chakra?

Massage is a very old form of medicine! You might think of it as relaxing, but did you know that it′s also therapeutic? A good massage helps you to boost your immune system, relaxes your muscles as well as your mind, gives your body a chance to rest, and helps you to fight off illness.

Massages also work on your energy centers, assisting them back into balance and wholeness again. There are several simple massages for you to do to realign your throat chakra. One of them is to get a drop of essential oil such as chamomile, cypress, or bergamot, and put it into almond or jojoba oil.

Smooth a bit of this onto the palms of your hands, and then, starting at your collarbone, move your hands up your throat toward your chin in smooth and soothing strokes. Do the sides and the back of your neck, too.

Inhale deeply as you massage, in through your nose and out through your mouth, so you can really get the benefit of these soothing oils working from the inside, as well as externally.

The throat chakra has to be kept balanced and healthy in order for you to find your niche in life and communicate your ideas clearly. It′s not difficult to realign it, nor is it hard to determine if it needs some work.

If you find your creativity lacking, your confidence fading, your thoughts staying in your head, or your communication faltering, you probably want to look into giving this area some attention.

Additionally, if you are getting a reputation for being pushy, critical, bombastic, or controlling, you also might want to focus on bringing this chakra back into balance and healing it through the methods detailed here.

You′ll know when it′s working well because your ideas will flow freely, your communication will be eloquent and effective, your creativity will find a way to express itself, and others will want to hear what you have to say. Just don′t forget to listen to their ideas, too—they also have a story to share.

Hi! I’m Charla Stone and I learned astrology and mysticism way back in the 1970s. I've spent the last four decades using the stars, tarot, runes, crystals, totems, and more to bring light and guidance to others. I’m just an old hippie at heart who has traveled the world to learn of its cultures. I’ve been published online and in print—which still rather surprises me, as this isn’t something I do, it’s just who I am! When I’m not writing or doing readings, I’m spending time in my garden or the art studio, or with my beloved dogs. Read More by Charla Stone
