As we find ourselves immersed in these cold winter months approaching a time of celebration and joy for many, we also find ourselves edging closer and closer to the December Solstice, which falls on the 21st December every year.
It is a powerful time spiritually for us and one which we can certainly explore further!
What is the December Solstice?
Known as the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the Summer solstice in the Southern, this is the day of the year where the Sun shines for the least amount of hours in the Northern Hemisphere and the most in the South.
Astrologically, it starts under the sign of Capricorn and spiritually it represents a time of rebirth and regeneration. It is from the start of the December Solstice that the sun shines brighter and the days start to get longer and therefore is powerfully symbolic for hope, faith and resurrection. Essentially, it is the rebirth of the sun. In the Pagan eras, the December Solstice was also called Yule.
The December Solstice also has a strong association with the Moon. The Moon is also known as the Goddess and she has a strong pull for many people (hence why we all tend to feel a little more vibrant in one way or another under the full moon!) Therefore, if we look at the Winter Solstice as a time of Sun rebirth and Moon association, we are looking at a very potent time indeed.
How Can Tarot Help Me During the December Solstice?
There are two Majors in the Tarot cards which are strongly associated with the Winter Solstice – the Moon and the Sun. These luminaries represent the Yin and Yang elements of life and it is through the Tarot card meanings that we begin to see how everything is interconnected. A Tarot card reading at this time can help you understand how these current energies of the Sun and Moon affect you – as the Winter Solstice is also a time of rebirth, it can also help you reflect on all that has come to pass and how you yourself are experiencing elements of rebirth.

4-Card Tarot Spread for the December Solstice:
Question: What do I need to concentrate on during the December Solstice?
- Card 1: What I need to focus on
- Card 2: What is standing in my way
- Card 3: What I need to let go of
- Card 4: How I can help myself
Below is an example reading so you can get an idea of how it goes:
Card 1: The Emperor
In this instance for what I need to focus on, the Emperor likely means a person in my life who is quite controlling. This could be a spouse, family member, work colleague, boss or something else who may be holding the reins of control in my life. It could also be referring to myself. Am I being too controlling or rigid in my beliefs? Am I not letting others have a say? Or am I being the total opposite, too timid for my own good?
Card 2: 5 of Swords
With the 5 of Swords as what is standing on my way, this indicates to me that I am letting someone – or even myself – walk all over me. The 5 of Swords is not the most pleasant card and can indicate conflict with some nastiness attached. It can also indicate an internal battle and a lack of self-confidence. This card indicates that I am not standing up for myself in some way.
Card 3: 6 of Cups
The 6 of Cups represents what I need to let go of and this indicates that there are memories from my past I am struggling to let go of. Judging by the
other two cards, I feel this reading is referring to myself – that I am lacking in confidence and it could be because of negative experiences I had when I was younger.
Card 4: The Sun
What a card to get for the December Solstice reading! The Sun is a card of joy and, in this case, rebirth. It is a card of striking confidence and having faith in one’s own abilities. As the card representing what I can do to help myself, it indicates that I should work on my self-confidence and my belief in myself.
Judging by this reading, my main focus this December Solstice should be to work on my self-confidence and let go of memories or experiences holding me back. My timidity and lack of confidence may be affecting me in my daily life and the Tarot card reading indicates it’s time to do something about it.
Conclusion…

The December Solstice is a powerful time of transformation; we all have something we need to focus on and work on in order to make life brighter, better and more fulfilling. Use the wisdom of the Tarot cards to help you discover how this solstice can help you!
