Welcome to another edition of ‘Ask Charla.′ You know, here at Astrology Answers I get a lot of questions from all corners of the globe; things to do with love and romance, chakras, tarot, astrology, numerology; if it′s metaphysical, then someone at some time has asked it!
So, you want to know about using a pendulum for picking cards, eh? That’s a fabulous question, and one I’m delighted to answer, for I often use this method myself! Pendulums are amazing divination devices, aligning both with your energy and the gravitational pull of the Earth to bring you insight and accuracy. Like all tools, though, there are some things to consider when using the pendulum. Let’s take a closer look!
Choosing Your Pendulum
There are as many different types of pendulums as there are people who use them. I’ve even known people dangle their wedding ring from a strand of hair, or use a pendant that they’re wearing! Like any tool, it’s best if your pendulum is one that is energetically bonded to you, something that is yours and yours alone, so that you fully understand its language.
Stone pendulums are popular. You might want to choose your birthstone, or a crystal that you resonate with. These are easily obtainable through main street metaphysical shops and online retailers.
Wooden and metal pendulums are also readily available in a wide selection of shapes and materials. When you choose a pendulum, you’re also choosing to work with the energy that it’s made from. A wood pendulum still contains the essence of the tree, and a metal pendulum the signature of its elemental structure, so make your selection wisely. It needs to resonate with you on all energetic levels.
Some dowsers like to use a pendulum that contains a blend of energies. It’s possible to find hollow pendulums so that you can include stones or herbs or other items into the body of the pendulum. This fine tunes it, so that it is even more in sync with you and what you’re asking it to do.
Chakra pendulums run through the color spectrum, and they’re a popular choice. The colors of the rainbow are associated with the energy centers that are found to run along your backbone, and also with the layers of the subtle body; the energy field that surrounds every living thing. Multicolored pendulums such as these are especially helpful when using with charts to find where there are weaknesses in the body, or for choosing the right foods or nutritional supplements. Many healers use chakra pendulums.

Using Your Pendulum
Your pendulum should be attuned to you before you start to use it. There are several ways of doing this. Carry it around with you, or leave it on your inside window ledge where it can catch a cycle of the Moon’s phases, or maybe just put it in with your personal clothing or jewelry. When I’m working with a new pendulum, I sleep with it under my pillow from one full Moon until the next.
You also have to find a comfortable way of holding your pendulum. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, apart from two important factors. It has to be comfortable in your hand, and it has to be able to swing. Some people loop the chain around their middle finger and let the pendulum dangle that way. I prefer to grip the chain between my thumb and my index finger knuckle, and let the pendulum fall over the back of my hand.
Next, you want to get your pendulum talking to you. Start by asking it questions that you know will be answered yes, like “Am I sitting down right now?” Be very specific; even ‘Is it raining,” is open ended, because it might be raining where you are, but not in another location!
When you’ve determined how the pendulum swings to give a ‘yes’ answer, you need to determine what ‘no’ is. Repeat the above process, but ask specific questions that you know will be answered no. If you absolutely hate bananas and anything to do with them, ask the pendulum, “Do I like bananas,’ and see how it replies.
Now the fun begins! Ask things that you don’t know, and see what the pendulum says. I get three very specific movements; back and forth for yes, around in a circle for no, and a funky arc shape for undetermined. You might find that your pendulum works in a perpendicular fashion; up and down for yes, side to side for no, and in a circle for maybe. Only by working with it and establishing its language can you really converse with your pendulum!
What Do You Want to Know?
Once you’ve got the pendulum talking to you, the only limit to how you can use it is your own imagination. It’s portable, doesn’t draw a lot of attention to itself, and its only real opponent is a blustery day! Want to know if you’ve found ‘the one’ in love? Dowse over their photo, and see what the pendie says! Not sure what brand to purchase in the store? Let your pendulum choose for you. You can even dowse over maps to find out where to go, or chakra charts, to see where your body requires a tuneup.
You mentioned wanting to use the pendulum when choosing cards, and this is an excellent combination of tools! Spread all of your cards out, so there’s no question where your pendulum is pointing, and then dowse as usual. The cards have their own specific energy. How successful this process is will depend on how well your pendulum is attuned to your unconscious and how strongly your cards are bonded to you. There are several ways your pendulum will work in conjunction with cards—tarot, oracles, or even playing cards—but that’s another topic for another time!
Conclusion
Pendulums are an incredibly useful tool that often gets overlooked. I’m so glad you asked this question! Whether you’re choosing cards, chakras, or chimichangas, the pendulum won’t let you down. Choose one that calls to you, keep it for your own individual use, and respect it as the asset that it is. Once you start chatting with your dangly friend, you’ll wonder how you managed before!
