Have you ever met an animal that was hyper like wind blowing through leaves? Perhaps you’ve met an aggressive animal that reminded you of a raging fire or a very slow-moving lovable pet that loved to sleep?
The elements of astrology are one way we can begin to understand why pets are each so unique in addition to the traits they inherit genetically. Certain breeds have certain tendencies and, the environment and early life experiences all shape their personalities just like humans.
Do Pets Have Zodiac Signs?
Have you ever wondered if the day your pet was born shapes their personality?
It may seem silly to ask this question but our pets affect our life so much and for some of us, we spend more time with our pets than our friends and family. Looking through the lens of astrology, we can understand what our pet feels like inside so we can better adjust to their energy just as we do with people. Just as you wouldn’t ask an outgoing hyper person to be alone all the time, you wouldn’t want to keep a naturally social dog cooped up.
Alternatively, just as you wouldn’t ask a shy and introverted person to be out and about a lot, the same goes for a naturally shy pet. Understanding their soul is something that many people never do, but it can prove very useful for them and for you.
Let’s try to understand these wonderful creatures based on their elements and then look at the specific traits of each sign. For those of you who have a pet, you know that even though they don’t speak words; they communicate a lot. This may help you unlock what they are trying to communicate to improve your relationship with them. This may also help you understand why you sometimes meet an animal and have to adopt them!
The Water Signs
These animals are sensitive, know how you’re feeling, moody, and cuddly. They don’t deal well with negative discipline.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
These pets cling to you and cry for no reason. They want to cuddle and can be a bit shy around new people. They need lots of love, affection, and are food motivated. They are affected by the energy of the home the most. This pet will love to nap. Your little Cancer friend is likely to be as sensitive as its human counterpart. Cancers love very deeply, and this pet probably looks at you as though you’re the only human that exists. They dislike being chastised, and might even go off to their own corner of the world to pout it out. They want your attention and they want it now!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)
These pets are intense and have a one-track mind so they may be an escape artist or get into the treats. They are always in your business but make you feel loved. They will help you get through the tough times because they are tuned into your emotions. Do you seek loyalty in your pets? Then the Scorpio animal will win you over almost instantaneously. They love you dearly and their home even more so. This is not a pet who enjoys moving around from place to place. They enjoy their time spent alone, but will often seek you out when they want to express their love. Their charm and loyalty will pull at all of your heartstrings.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)
This pet loves to be your constant companion, and they are likely a lap pet. They are playful and snugly and need human interaction. They will always try to cheer you up. This is another pet sign that includes a modicum of sensitivity and perhaps moodiness. They pick up on your mood, so be careful when you’re stewing and ranting as your furry friend can sense this and it will pain them. These animals may fall prey to impulse and indulge their curiosity in a manner that sometimes causes accidents for them, so keep an eye out when they’re on an adventure. This pet is likely to want to stay snuggled up with you all day.
The Fire Signs
These animals are loyal, energetic, temperamental, and confident. They may be jealous, possessive, or aggressive when untrained.
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
This pet is always on the go, digging, playing with toys, and doing anything they can to get attention. They are moody and can get snippy but will quickly forget. They are dominant so they need an authoritative voice to train them. An Aries pet is likely to exhibit signs of bravery and leadership, often protecting the other, perhaps smaller, animals in the house—and even keeping a watchful eye on you. Aries pets want to be the boss, the alpha, and even their stride seems confident. They let you know when they want attention and typically enjoy quite a bit of independence. They might be more territorial than other animal signs, much like their human counterparts.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)
This pet will go to great lengths to get your attention whether that means going through the trash, jumping on the furniture, or making noise. They are fun and love to play with other animals and people as long as they can be the boss. Like their Aries cousins, Leo pets tend to lead rather than follow. Think of the pride of a lion and remember that your little Leo friend possesses this level of confidence and determination. They are faithful to their owners, but they may become upset with you when you establish your dominance or scold them. This pet sign is particularly well-behaved and loving with children, so feel free to bring the little humans around.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)
This is the pet that is always finding adventure and wanting to explore. They are good-natured but given the chance, they will dash outside. The pets who fall in the sign of Sagittarius are energetic and strong-willed. They can almost be seen as the dopey, fun-loving sign of the group. Sure, they may have trouble with their balance or even act goofy at times, but they make up for their clumsiness with their ability to love. They develop a fierce bond between themselves and their humans, so if you want adoration and love, this is the sign to look for.

They need stimulation or playmates. These pets contain an almost endless well of energy, and they aren’t afraid to share it. These perceptive pets understand you in an almost eerie way. Their gentle intuition seems to follow and anticipate your every mood. They are curious and adventurous, making this one of the easiest pet signs to groom – no attitude or scratches along the way! Like many of the signs we’ve explored today, this pet loves their snacks and should be monitored around food to avoid weight-based illnesses. This pet will always bring a smile to your face.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)
These pets don’t like to roll in the mud and stay in control of their environment. They feel safe when there is routine and predictable patterns to their day. They are very attached to their owners and tend to be shy around other animals and humans. Have you ever met a Virgo person who wasn’t orderly and neat? Virgo pets share the same love for cleanliness and may be found grooming themselves every chance they get, they also love a good brush or bath. This sign is representative of knowing oneself and one’s desires, and as such this can make for quite a demanding animal, perhaps more so than any other sign. Don’t fret, silly human, this pet will let you know what they want and when they want it, whether it be attention or supper.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
These pets can be overprotective because of their natural need to stay loyal and love to please their owners. They also need to get their energy out and feel productive so giving them tasks is important. Capricorn animals are often a bit of an alpha personality when they are young and more dignified as they age but their Capricorn wisdom shines through in their personality no matter what age. They enjoy napping, eating, and cleanliness. Like their Taurus cousin, their love for snacks can prove problematic at an older age, so force some exercise upon this fun-loving pet. They’re peaceful and pleasant pets to have around.
Animal & Owner Compatibility
What we really want to know though is how we can get along with our pet and that is where understanding your sign and how it relates to theirs is important. If your animal was born on the cusp of two signs, then it will have the personality of both signs.
You may be able to think back and remember pets you really bonded with and others that you had trouble getting along with. When it comes to the animal kingdom, the compatibility of astrology still applies.
Don’t think that if astrology says you and your pet are not compatible, that your relationship is doomed or that you won’t have issues if you are compatible. Compatibility is meant to help you understand how you can fit together, what areas you can find common ground, and how to respond better to each other.

Many of us don’t know the time of birth of our furry friends so pulling a full chart may be tough and we rarely know the location which pulling the Moon sign would require. However, if you can make an accurate approximation, the Moon sign can give you great insight into the emotional needs of your pet so you can give them the TLC they really need.
Closing Thoughts…
Perhaps this could help you if you’re thinking of becoming a pet owner and wanting a certain energy level that matches yours or will inspire you to be more active. Now when your dog avoids large crowds or your cat runs toward the window every time a bird flies by, you can at least have a better understanding as to why.
If you don’t know your pet’s birthday, you can still take a good guess and pay attention to how the astrological events affect them. For example, they may be tired and snugly when the Moon is in a Water sign or full of life and energetic when the Moon is in a Fire sign. They may be emotional, moody, or even stubborn just like us based on the Moon so keep an eye out for how their mood shifts with the Moon and it may just help you understand astrology better!
It may be fun to look up your pet’s Chinese Zodiac sign or numerology as well. Keep in mind the Chinese new year is not the same date as the western new year. Perhaps there is a crystal that would help your dog based on their zodiac sign. They do make adorable crystal pet collar charms. Finally, don’t forget to look up your pet’s daily horoscope.
