Across cultures and as far back as we know, people have tried to understand the hidden messages in their dreams. What do my dreams mean? Can they predict the future, are they meaningless or is there a way to interpret what shows up to better understand ourselves?
Dream interpretation is now a form of therapy, and people study extensively to become a professional dream analyzer. It recognizes three main types of dreams.
The most rare type of dream is precognition where you see what is going to happen in advance. The second most rare is lucid dreaming where you are aware that you’re dreaming. Sometimes people can direct their dreams which is a form of astral travel or astral projection where your consciousness leaves your body and you’re able to direct it.
Astral projection can happen during a meditation as well. The most common type of dreaming is subconscious dreaming where your subconscious is playing out its fears, bringing up messages and hidden desires in your mind. This is where most dream analyzation is done to help you heal your fears and perceptions.
The most important thing to know about dream interpretation is that everything and everyone represents a part of your psyche (Unless it is a precognitive dream which is very rare). Here are some of the most common symbols we see in our dreams and how to interpret their meaning.
Houses
A house represents your body. If you’re inside a home, notice which part of the home you’re in because your unconscious may be helping you bring awareness to taking care of that part of your body. Notice the condition of the home. Is it clean or is it dirty? Is the house being destroyed?
If there is a disaster, it’s your unconscious alerting you to a potential hazardous way of thinking or even an invitation that is not good for your health or well being. If you’re outside of the house it can mean you are not listening to your body and need to pay more attention to your health or what your body is trying to tell you about your life.
What is happening inside the house and how symbolically alerting you about your life? If someone is in your house, notice how they make you feel and ask yourself if they are influencing the way you take care of yourself. If you feel lost in a house, maybe it’s asking you to get in touch with your own emotions or study how to take care of yourself better.
If you feel like the area in the house correlates to a specific chakra (The basement could be the root chakra and the attic could be the crown or third eye chakra), you can also look at balancing that specific chakra with meditation, foods, essential oils, crystals or reiki.
Cars
Cars also represent your body. Is the car being driven by someone else? That could mean that you are not making choices for yourself and allowing someone else to dominate your psyche. Is there a flat tire on one side? The masculine energy and father issues are on the right side while feminine energy and mother issues are on the left.
Is the car speeding out of control? That could mean you’re moving so fast that you need to slow down and see why you’re not taking care of yourself. If the car crashes, did someone hit you from behind or did you cause the accident? This could help you see that other people may not have good intentions or that you need to reflect on your own intentions.
If you’re travelling, it can mean that you’re changing the way you think about things. If you are revisiting the same place in your car or the same type of story keeps playing out, notice who is there and ask your heart what it means. If you’re constantly trying to get somewhere but get lost, maybe it’s time to see a spiritual counselor who can help you with guidance or find a mentor.
If your car is missing parts, wheels or is just incomplete, look at which areas of your life are out of balance with love, finances, friendships, family, spirituality, home, hobbies and work.
Water
Water in your dream represents emotions. Most often we experience storms or being in water, tidal waves or floods. These means that we are having a lot of emotions and they need to be recognized. It’s important for us to recognize our emotions to let them go.
Otherwise, they manifest as stress and pain in our body. If water is engulfing you and you feel overtaken by it in your dream, take some time to listen to your heart and see what emotions need to be dealt with so they don’t take over your life. Journal about it and do something relaxing so you can let some of your pent up energy go.
If the water in your dream is peaceful, then your emotions are stable and working for you. In that case, something you’re doing to keep yourself positive is working. If someone in your life is in the water with you, it often represents an unresolved emotional issue draining your energy with that person.
It doesn’t always have to do with that person but they may bring you back to a time in your life where you experienced certain things or thought a certain way.
Weather
The weather is also related to your emotions, just like water. If there is a tornado, you may feel like something is trying to control you or things are out of control. It’s as if a momentum is sweeping you away but you truly do not want to be a part of it or need to set boundaries so it doesn’t overpower you.
This can be a subtle psychological situation at work, where you are being taken advantage of or a subtle manipulation that is draining you in one of your relationships where you are giving too much.
If you dream of a rain storm, it means your emotions are probably getting the best of you and you’re not seeing clearly because of them. If there is a lot of water in the storm it means your emotion needs to be recognized so you don’t blow up. It’s showing you what is brewing beneath the surface.
If you are lost in a storm or lose your personal belongings it could mean that you have lost touch with your heart and soul and are pointing in a direction that is destructive to your soul’s purpose and emotional well being.
Colors
Colors are very significant if you remember them. Colors come from your intuition and usually relate to the emotions of the chakra they represent. A blue wall or a yellow shirt can clue you into the chakra that needs balancing in your life. When there is a color in your dream, pay attention to the other things happening and how the color makes you feel.
Once you know which chakra your dream is making you aware of, find a yoga pose to work with what balances that chakra.
Red corresponds to your root chakra and survival. It’s a sense of security. Orange is the second chakra and relates to creativity and sexuality. Yellow is your third chakra and relates to willpower and confidence. Green corresponds to the heart chakra and the giving and receiving of love.
Blue is the fifth chakra which is all about communication of truth. Purple is the sixth chakra which is our third eye and intuition. The seventh chakra corresponds to white and our link to our soul and spirit. Gold is the eighth chakra which is our radiant body or aura.
