As you become more interested in learning astrology, you can explore some new, exciting topics. One of those is likely Lilith!
In astrology, Lilith is applied to four positions:
- Mean Black Moon Lilith
- True Black Moon Lilith
- Dark Moon Lilith
- Asteroid Lilith
Let’s get into the four Liliths in astrology, how to find them in your birth chart, and reveal exactly what they mean.
The Mythology of Lilith
To understand Lilith, we need to go all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Lilith was the very first woman and was Adam’s first wife…
Like Adam, Lilith was made from the Earth, so she saw herself as equal to Adam, not inferior. When Adam wanted Lilith to be sexually submissive to him, she refused and was kicked out of Eden and replaced with Eve (who, being made from Adam, couldn’t refuse him).
What happened to Lilith after being kicked out of the Garden of Eden varies.
Since we’ve been a patriarchy all of this time, most of the stories weren’t pretty (like she went stark-raving mad and stole babies – they really didn’t think very highly of women back then, especially ones who didn’t do as they were told!).
The Four Liliths in Astrology
In astrology, we have four placements designated for Ms. Lilith.
Two are actually for the same thing—Black Moon Lilith. This is the most widely associated point with Lilith and most widely used by astrologers.
Black Moon Lilith
Black Moon Lilith has two positions: Mean and True or Oscillating. To be technical, Black Moon Lilith is the apogee of the Moon (the farthest point in the Moon’s orbit), and this movement is almost ridiculously wonky.
It’s really all over the place!
The exact position is called True or Oscillating Black Moon Lilith (sometimes labeled True/Oscillating). Mean Black Moon Lilith is the averaged-out position (smoothing out the wild movement).
There is debate about which is “better” or “accurate,” but you can look up both in your own natal chart and see which seems stronger or makes the most sense for you. Personally, I find True Black Moon Lilith tends to be a bigger influence in the natal chart, while I only use Mean Black Moon Lilith in transit (predictive work).
Dark Moon Lilith
Then we have Dark Moon Lilith.
Some people call Black Moon Lilith Dark Moon Lilith, but they’re not the same point (repeat, not the same point!). Given the confusion, to make it clearer, Dark Moon Lilith is more often called its other name, which is Waldemath or Waldemath Moon.
Waldemath is basically just a shadowy dust cloud. It’s only thought to exist and hasn’t actually been discovered (well, it was thought to be discovered by scientist George Waldemath, who it’s named after, but he later took that back; others have believed that it actually is there though, so it’s totally up for debate from a scientific perspective).
Asteroid Lilith
Finally, we have asteroid Lilith. This is the only physical body for Lilith since Black Moon Lilith is just a point in the Moon’s orbit, and Waldemath Moon is just a theoretical dust shadow.
Since asteroid Lilith is the only physical body, some argue that this is the most important Lilith (but Black Moon Lilith is still the most used).

What the Four Liliths in Astrology Mean
The four Liliths all revolve around the same Lilith mythology. Unfortunately, thanks to that previously-mentioned patriarchy, Lilith was given a very negative slant for most of her history.
Big surprise! (sarcasm is being used here)
But we’re not having that now. Let’s look at the story of Lilith again. She saw herself as being equal to Adam. This means Lilith is in a position that knows its value and self-worth. It doesn’t view itself as inferior to others and sees no reason to.
She refused to be submissive to Adam. This means Lilith is a position that stands up for itself and what it believes. It may experience opposition and consequences (since she did get kicked out of Eden), but that doesn’t matter.
It’s about what you believe is right.
Lilith is a hidden inner power source we all have rooted in valuing ourselves and standing up for what we believe. That’s some serious strength!
There are some other associations with Lilith, like witchiness. Lilith is the original witch, so having a strong Lilith can make you a super mystic.
Given the sexual side to Lilith’s story with Adam (and some stories that say she’s a sex demon), this point can also be connected to sexual desires, especially what’s repressed sexually. I find that it can also be connected to being sexually independent and not giving in to others’ sexual demands (like Lilith).
Some believe that all four Liliths can be interpreted the same way since they’re all linked to Lilith. Some believe that asteroid Lilith is a little more feminist and independent, and Dark Moon Lilith is a little darker and wilder.
You can see what they’re doing for you and judge for yourself.
Finding the Four Liliths in Your Birth Chart
I recommend using Astro.com to find your four Liliths in your birth chart since you can do them all at once.
Go to the website, click on My Astro (upper right), and then input your birth data (date, time, and place of birth). Click on Extended Chart Selection, and then click on Additional Objects (bottom).
Select “Lilith” in the menu (which will give you the Mean Black Moon Lilith position), and in the “Manual entry” box, type in: h13, h58, 1181
H13 is for True/Oscillating Black Moon Lilith, h58 is for Dark Moon Lilith (it’ll show as Waldemath), and 1181 is for asteroid Lilith.
Then generate your natal chart.
See which zodiac signs they’re located in, which of your natal houses they reside in, and what aspects they’re making to your chart. If any are conjunct (aligned with) any planets or house cusps in your natal chart, that one will be most prominent for you, and whatever is conjunct, it will get that Lilith energy in a big way!
