Numerology dice on a teal background.

Have you ever wondered if the numbers you’re seeing in your everyday life are trying to tell you something? Do you see certain numbers or numerical patterns repeating (like 11:11), maybe in your date of birth and your phone number, or your address, or perhaps even an employee number? The idea that numbers can speak to you isn’t as far fetched as you might think. It’s an ancient study called numerology.

Numerology is the study of numbers and how they relate to you. Just as every color vibrates on a different frequency, every number does too - and just as you’re naturally attracted to some colors more than others, different numbers resonate with you more than others.

Basic calculations turn into universal truths that give us the tools we need to become our best selves. It helps us understand who we are, what motivates us, what obstacles we face, and allows us to organize our capabilities in this lifetime.

At its simplest, Numerology is a universal language that allows us to study the energies of each number. This study looks beyond just the lucky numbers you get on a fortune cookie and analyzes the numerological value of names, years, words, and concepts.

Core Numbers in Numerology

There are so many numbers in your chart that you can identify with in your lifetime:

  1. Life Path Number - General themes from your life.
  2. Hearts Desire Number - Brings out your inner drive and soul purpose. If you are looking for a satisfied life that is full of love, this number can help guide you.
  3. Past Life Number - The energy from your past lives can be channeled through this number, allowing us to peer into the past and regain the lessons we learned.
  4. Personality Number - Dives deeper into your personality and demonstrates how others see you, how you behave, and how you react to situations.
  5. Hidden Passion Number - Reveals your strengths and desires to help you pursue the right path.
  6. Personal Year Number - Gives a quick glance into the themes and energy of the year ahead and what opportunities it will provide you.
  7. Expression Number/Destiny Number - provides clues to finding your true self in your work, home, social and creative life. This number helps us sort out our aspirations.
  8. Name Number - This number is representative of your soul's purpose and the growth that you have the potential to achieve.
  9. Birth Number - Illustrate your natural skills and talents that you are born with.

Once you know your personal numbers, you can wear them proudly and use them as a numerological guide to navigate the world around you. Just like Astrology or Tarot, you can get daily numerology readings that look at the date, month, the year to help you channel the energies surrounding you.

It is also associated with divination, as crystals and other tools can be brought in to channel number energy.

History of Numerology

The earliest records of Numerology in practice comes from ancient Egypt and Babylon origins with very little detail to its beginnings. Despite these mysterious origins, numerical energies are weaved throughout the history of the Romans, Greeks, and Japanese.

Numerology was discussed heavily by philosophers such as Pythagoras (570 - 495 BC), who prioritized mathematical concepts over physical ones to regulate society as they were a “universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth.”

Later, in 325 AD Numerology would be classified as a violation of the state church within the Roman Empire due to its association with banned arts such as astrology, divination, and magic. In modern times, significant numbers have not disappeared from religious groups even though the approach to ‘sacred numbers’ is different in each circumstance.

Later, Dr. Julian Stenton was the first person to come up with the name ‘Numerology’ for this study of numbers, and was a driving force introducing it back into popularity. Modern Numerology is a bit more divided as there are various methods used by prominent numerologists. There are many books and theories created as more interest is focused on the power of numbers.

Discover Your Life Path Number

Do you know your life path number? If you don’t, or don’t know much about it, this is a great place to start.

Your life path number uses your date of birth to calculate the number that represents the path you are on in this lifetime. You can use your life path number to guide your decisions on almost anything in your relationships, love life, career, and social life.

That is why your life path number is the most important number in your numerology reading. Knowing someone’s life path number allows you to dig deep and truly know them.

In most cases, it will be a single numeral from 1 to 9, although there are some master numbers that are double digits. The only exceptions to the single digit rule are the numbers 11, 22 and sometimes 33. These numbers have special resonance, and because of that, are not reduced to a single numeral.

To find your life path number, use our life path number calculator.

How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

To calculate your life path number yourself, add the day, month, and year of your birth. For example, if you were born on 17 November 1971.

  1. Add the numbers in your birth date — the 17th — together (1 + 7 = 8)
  2. Then add the month. November is the 11th month, so you’d need to add 1 + 1 to get 2
  3. Add all the numbers in the year together; 1 + 9 + 7 + 1 adds up to 18, which can then be added together (1 + 8) to get 9
  4. Now, add those single digit numbers together, and reduce: 8 + 2 + 9 = 19; 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1

In this instance, the life path number would be 1. Your life path number is just one way that numbers can speak to you, but what does it mean?

About Your Personal Life Path Number

Life Path Number 1

Get excited, number 1! You’re determined, independent, and original, but you need to learn some patience. It doesn’t always have to be all about you! Once you master that, you’ll find your natural leadership abilities will start to shine.

Life Path Number 2

If number 2 is your life path number, then you’re very diplomatic, very sensitive, and you need harmony in your life. Sometimes it can be hard to motivate you because you do enjoy taking the easy road. However, when it’s something that speaks strongly to you, you can be determined to the point of stubbornness!

Life Path Number 3

Number 3’s are proverbial social butterflies! You like people, you are curious and inquisitive and enjoy a good conversation, even a good debate! Just make sure that your wide and varied interests don’t give you an air of superficiality.

Life Path Number 4

Helpful, caring, traditional, and sympathetic all describe you if you’re a life path number 4. You just have to watch your sensitivity, though, for your caring can easily turn to clinging if you allow it. It’s nothing that a bit of attention and perseverance can’t bring back into balance.

Life Path Number 5

Is your number 5? You’re social and curious and enjoy your life. There’s a lot of creativity about you, and you could be luckier than other Life Path numbers. Just keep your ego in check, though, because it could easily run away with you.

Life Path Number 6

Number 6 is the number of focus, responsibility, and attention to detail. You’re very dedicated to the things and people you believe in but watch your criticism. Your analytic nature tends to make you a bit judgemental. You don’t always have to be right.

Life Path Number 7

Some say that the number 7 is lucky, and indeed for you, it may be! You’re balanced, you seek harmony and beauty, you’re contemplative and intuitive. It doesn’t matter whether you’re introverted or extroverted; you can be the center of attention or you can enjoy your own company equally.

Life Path Number 8

If your number is 8, you’re ambitious, influential, and love investigating what makes things — and people — tick. It’s easy for you to take control, and you could find that this can lead to you taking control of your financial karma in a very positive way. Just remember not to get too bossy; it could be detrimental to your success.

Life Path Number 9

Life path number 9 is the idealist. You’re humanitarian and you want the best for everyone. It’s easy for you to express yourself, but you may find that you have trouble with commitments and attachments.

Life Path Number 11

Number 11 is one of the master numbers, and if it is your life path number, then you’ve got a specific purpose here on Earth. You’re intuitive, and a born leader, but you have very high expectations of yourself and others. This can lead you to frustration and withdrawal. Don’t let it.

Life Path Number 22

Number 22 is the second of the master numbers, and if this is yours then you were born with the potential to shine and be incredibly successful. Resourceful and with the aptitude for power and fame, you may have to work hard to transcend ego and see the bigger picture, so that you can be who you were truly born to become.

Life Path Number 33

Number 33 is the last of the three master numbers, and if this is yours you were born to a life of pure energy. You are highly spiritual and constantly searching for enlightenment through education, music, art, and personal discovery, this is why number is often referred to as the ‘master teacher’ by numerologists.

While this is the most difficult number to keep balanced, you are compassionate, generous, attractive and sentimental. You’re no stranger to personal sacrifice and taking responsibility in order to maintain harmony within your life.

When master numbers aren’t focused on, this number can be reduced to 6, meaning that people with master numbers technically have two life path numbers to balance.

Let’s Get Counting

Numerology has its place when it comes to understanding your role in the story of your life. Numbers can speak to you in other ways, too—for example, when you see numeric sequences appearing on digital clocks, license plates, and so on. Pay attention to those numbers. After all, everything in the universe can be broken down to a mathematical equation; why then can’t the universe use those numbers to communicate with you on a one to one level? Food for thought, indeed!
